Kalahari National Park
The wider Kalahari is a vast region of sandy soils, bleak landscapes and low rain fall. But only in the south does it resemble a true desert and even here the wilderness sustains a remarkable array of life forms.
Drought is the normal condition in the southern Kalahari. For most of the time the land lies comatose under the scorching Africa sun, its plants withered, its animals hidden, seeking what little shade they can find. But when the rare rains come, the countryside becomes a parkland paradise.
