Kalahari National Park

Kalahari National park or rather the wider Kalahari is a vast region of sandy soils, bleak landscapes and low rain fall. But only in the south does it resemble a true desert and even here the wilderness sustains a remarkable array of life forms. The Kalahari is a semi desert region and stretches from the south east in Namibia over the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park towards Mabuasehube and Central Kalahari In Botswana. This is one of the largest conservation regions in the world.

Drought is the normal condition in the southern Kalahari. For most of the time the land lies comatose under the scorching Africa sun, its plants withered, its animals hidden, seeking what little shade they can find. But when the rare rains come, the countryside becomes a parkland paradise.

Deserts and semi deserts, with their vast open spaces, desolation and timeless solitude, leave lasting impressions on most people after their first visit. It is perhaps the seductive contrast between the unrelenting silence and the vicious heat and dryness which produces such impressions.

For all organisms, life in the desert is a challenge; for man, perhaps the greatest challenge is the solitude. The sensitive ecology of the Kalahari can be seen when the drought or dry season receives a relief from the long awaited rains towards the ever fading raining season.

This transition will enlighten your views on the life and living of the Kalahari Desert. It is a visible change where all turns to colour and the hidden will be seen from the Kalahari sands below. Bullfrogs appear and catfish come to visit. Experience the timelessness of the Kalahari.

Kalahari National Park !

Over Time the concept of Kalahari National park has changed and regions have been joined and separated. The previous Kalahari National park is the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park today. Umkulu Safari & Canoe Trails have decided to dedicate a site to the Kalahari and Kgalagadi region of Southern Africa.
